Review: Raven Grimassi’s “Crafting a Tradition of Witchcraft”

By Alan U. Dalul | 52 minutes ago

Fire burns as long as we take care of it, recognize what it needs, and how to keep it alive. We can’t do it the same way during summer and winter. Raven Grimassi also kept this in mind. A tradition doesn’t stay frozen in time, but grows with its members as they shape its ideas and work.

New research from data on three dozen countries suggests a rise in belief in Pagan-aligned practices like ancestor veneration, genii loci, animal spirits, and spiritual energies.

Editorials and Analysis

  • Here we go again: David Brooks’s misuse of “paganism” as a cultural corruption
    By Manny Moreno

In an age where religious minorities — especially Pagans — already face real marginalization, suspicion, and in some cases, violence, Brooks’s carelessness, and by proxy, The New York Times's carelessness for publishing it with little editorial concern,  is irresponsible.

  • Editorial: It’s about time someone stood up for the U.S.’s persecuted Christian minority
    By Eric O. Scott

Until now the Christians have had to suffer in silence. Now, thanks to the Trump administration, they can complain in anonymity.

Pagan Living

  • Supreme Court Hears Case on Parents’ Religious Rights to Exempt Children from School Books
    By Manny Moreno

The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments this morning in Mahmoud v. Taylor, a case that pits two foundational principles of public education against each other: the authority of local school boards to set a unified curriculum, and the rights of religious parents to exempt their children from materials they find objectionable.

  • “Beneath the Trees” (2019): folk horror made with ten tropes and zero soul
    By Meg Elison

As the sage Lil Wayne once said, there are two ways to make art: be good or be good at it. A film does not have to be innovative or even have anything new to say for audiences to respond. This film is neither good nor good at it. I didn’t want to sing along, so here I am to heckle.

Pagan Perspectives

  • Opinion: When the world is running down, you make the best of what’s still around
    By Clio Ajana

It is at moments like these that we need to remember the image of Temperance and what it stands for, internally and externally. Are we willing to look inside ourselves  to seek where we need change or where we need to hold fast to our ideals, beliefs, and foundational purpose?

  • The Bear, the Great Mother, and the Weary Determination of My Heart
    By Sheri Barker

Hospitals are always places where life and death cross paths and even sometimes walk together. This is one reason hospitals send chills crawling up our spines and through our nervous systems like a fast-growing poison ivy vine.

  • “We are children of the Sun”: new exhibit honors Mexica Coyolxāuhqui stone
    By Manny Moreno

A new exhibit in Mexico City honors the discovery of the stunning Coyolxāuhqui Stone, which tells the myth of the Mexica goddess of the moon.

Tarot of the Week

Deck: The Field Tarot, by Hannah Elizabeth Fofana, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

Card: Three (3) of Wands

The next seven days are apt to focus on advancing plans and projects that may call for dreaming large. Confidence in one’s ability to not only ride the wave of momentum that has been created, but to continue to devote energy and resources to maintain it is indicated. There is also the potential for multiple options for expansion to be presented that either may not have existed before or that went unnoticed. Dedication and sustained efforts have the potential to offer major dividends.

In contrast, while opportunities for furthering current endeavors may be available, the tendency to lean towards more conservative options has the potential to limit or even stifle growth. Unexpected delays are likely to cause frustration, particularly if projected plans for progress were unrealistic or not thoroughly plotted and researched. Taking extra time to fully assess plans and trusting the intuition can help to minimize possible delays and avoid obstacles.
