There is no denying that these have been horrible times for many. As a Witch, I always aim at calming and healing in the middle of the storms, and with so much horrific news, so much hate and prejudice, I decided to take care of myself so I could take care of others. To do this, I armed myself with a deck that took me back in time to when I was a kid, the Neopets: The Official Tarot Deck A 78-Card Deck and Guidebook, Faerie Edition, which gave me hope in this time of need, and I hope it will do the same for those who need it.

Impress your friends and family with your fortune-telling skills. This officially licensed Neopets tarot deck features 78 of your favorite characters from Neopia, as well as a guidebook to help you thoughtfully interpret your cards. Each illustrated card combination will offer guidance, insight, and reflection with the help of the Neopets faeries. The deck contains all of the traditional major (22 cards) and minor (56 cards) arcana. It can be read as you would a Rider-Waite deck.
As Witches, we are always writing and talking about shadow work, healing, resilience, and strength. We love our folklore, our myths, and our centuries-old ideas that have proven useful time and time again. However, as I learned about folklore in a college class last year, folklore can also be born from a friend’s conversation, a club’s inner jokes, or, in this case, the internet.
Enter Neopets, a land of fantasy creatures where friendship seems to abound and where stories have intertwined since Neopia’s genesis in 1999 from the minds of Adam and Donna Powell. Each of the countries around Neopia is full of stories, legends, games, and illustrious people who endured the passage of (digital) time.
After two decades of existence, Neopets has expanded its lore and stories, resulting in a huge array of tales that represent the messages of the most traditional tarot decks. From the Water Faerie Marina, guardian of the Healing Springs, as the Ace of Cups, to the infamous witch Edna, resident of the Witch’s Tower in the Haunted Woods, as the Three of Pentacles, each card presents a different resident of Neopia that exemplifies the message they herald.

One can wonder why use an internet, man-made folklore-inspired deck instead of one based on well-known myths? The easiest answer can be “why not?” Why would we need a reason to try something new, something that might be fun and different?
And this ties in with the longer answer: sometimes we need to.
Sometimes we need to let go of the seriousness that we’ve been sold as adults, recover hope, recover creativity, recover innocence. This is something this deck has helped me a lot with. While there has been so much fear, so much hatred, so much prejudice all around, going back to my childhood refuge that was Neopia, proved most helpful, not to mention guidance-providing.
I remember being a little Alan, so afraid of the world, eager to learn and to explore, but terrified enough that I found solace in the internet. Neopia is a land that allowed me to dream beyond my wildest imaginations, that inspired several hours of daydreaming, and fed my creativity to no end. I needed that energy again, but I didn’t know it until I got this deck.

With clear, direct, yet gentle messages, all the characters give you the guidance you need as a person and as a Witch. It brings back that clean joy, that newborn wonder, zest for life, that rejuvenates the spirit and gives you hope for the future. The more I used it, the better I felt, and I noticed a change in my attitude as well. There’s a different, softer kind of magic in those cards, but just as effective as any other deck.
I would recommend this tarot to anyone interested in exploring their inner child, recovering their innocence, and becoming hopeful once again in the face of adversity. It is a sugary, bright deck that looks funny, for sure, but that’s where its power comes from. It is a much-needed reminder that magic can be born anywhere, anyhow, including the internet.
