Pagan Community Notes: Week of July 2, 2026

TWH — On Saturday, the United States celebrates Independence Day, a particularly meaningful one this year as the nation marks its 250th anniversary. Better known simply as the Fourth of July (which, conveniently, is also the date everywhere else on Earth), the federal holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the thirteen American colonies declared themselves free from British rule. Across the country, communities will celebrate with fireworks, parades, concerts, picnics, barbecues, and other patriotic festivities honoring the nation’s history, ideals, and diverse culture. To all of our readers celebrating, we wish you a safe and happy Independence Day!

Yesterday, Canadians celebrated Canada Day, marking the anniversary of Confederation on July 1, 1867, when the Province of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia united to form the Dominion of Canada within the British Empire. Across the country, communities observed the holiday with fireworks, parades, concerts, picnics, and other patriotic festivities, much like Independence Day celebrations in the United States. For many, the day is an opportunity to reflect on Canada’s history, cultures, and continuing evolution as a nation. To all of our Canadian readers, we hope you had a wonderful Canada Day!

Happy World UFO Day! (We are not making this up.)

TWH— World UFO Day is an annual observance held on July 2 that encourages people to learn about and discuss reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), now more commonly referred to by many governments and researchers as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). The day also promotes skywatching and public interest in the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

The date of July 2 was chosen because it is associated with the Roswell incident, one of the most famous and enduring UFO cases. In July 1947, the U.S. military initially announced that it had recovered a “flying disc” before quickly revising its statement to say the debris came from a weather balloon. Decades later, the U.S. government concluded the wreckage was from the classified Project Mogul, though alternative explanations continue to be debated.

Public fascination with UFOs—now more commonly referred to as unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP)—has only grown in recent years. Congressional hearings, testimony from military personnel and whistleblowers, the release of Department of Defense records, and ongoing calls for greater government transparency have brought renewed attention to reports of unexplained aerial encounters. Whether these phenomena ultimately prove to be advanced technology, natural occurrences, human-made objects, or something else entirely, they continue to capture the public imagination and inspire curiosity about what may still be undiscovered.

Whether you’re a believer, a skeptic, or simply someone who enjoys a good mystery, we wish you a happy World UFO Day. And, in the immortal words of the late Jack Horkheimer, longtime executive director of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium and host of PBS’ Star Hustler: “Keep Looking Up!” 🛸

Tarot of the Week by Star Bustamonte

Deck: Wicked Tarot Deck, by Casey Gilly, illustrations by Cinthya Álvarez, published by Insight Editions.

Card: Three (3) of Coins

The upcoming week has the potential to offer opportunities for introspection, especially when one’s actions are called into question. Honest self-evaluation, as well as taking into account the opinions of trusted friends and advisors, may offer clarity. Ultimately, it will be up to the individual whether criticism is valid and calls for altering their behavior or not. Discerning which battle(s) to engage in is likely to be key this week.

Conversely, the position one may find themselves in is likely to be untenable and unwinnable when it comes to the opinions of others. Folks are going to think and believe whatever they choose, and it is extremely unlikely anything said or done will change their minds. The only way forward is to let it go of what cannot be controlled and move on.

MORE CONGRATULATIONS!

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — House of Black Cat Magic has been named the No. 1 Best Cat Café in the United States in the 2026 USA TODAY 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards.

The Asheville business earned the top ranking after being nominated by a panel of travel experts and USA TODAY journalists before advancing to a month-long public vote conducted by readers.

Opened in 2023, House of Black Cat Magic combines a metaphysical retail shop with a lounge dedicated exclusively to adoptable black cats. In partnership with the nonprofit Binx’s Home for Black Cats, the café says it has helped place more than 750 black cats and kittens into permanent homes.

Visitors can spend time with a dozen adoptable cats in the lounge while browsing books, crystals, candles, and other metaphysical items. The venue’s focus on black cats also seeks to challenge longstanding superstitions that have contributed to lower adoption rates for black-furred cats compared with other shelter animals.

Black cats have long been embraced by the Pagan and Witchcraft community as symbols of companionship, intuition, and magic rather than bad luck. The café’s national recognition highlights both its distinctive blend of metaphysical culture and animal rescue, as well as growing public interest in businesses that celebrate and advocate for often-overlooked feline companions.
