Once the immediate danger had passed, though, it was not long before the facades began to crack and slide away like pieces of mud-caked siding. The groups of helpers that traveled in from other areas started to include hate groups, religious zealots, bigots, and con artists. Some local helpers began to show their true colors, too.

It’s always a fraught moment when somebody recognizes my necklace, which I realize is strange – the point of wearing a Thor’s Hammer is to publicly identify oneself as a Heathen, after all – but I’m still caught off-guard every time it happens. I’m forced to make a swift evaluation of my surroundings and my social context. Who is this person? What assumptions are they making about me? What assumptions do they think I will make of them?

Eco-fascism and mass killings

The Ecological Spiritualities Conference held a panel that discussed eco-fascism and featured Deja Newton who spoke on “The History of Eco-Fascism and Its Spirituality.” The recent mass shooting in Buffalo reflects this type of harmful ideology.
