Column: Will Anything Happen?

By Karl E. H. Seigfried | April 30, 2022

Does the value of religiosity as response end at the line of the sacred circle drawn by practitioners, or does it truly make a difference outside of that circle? Beyond therapeutic effects for the practitioners themselves, are we just doing a form of that most ineffective and overly online form of religiosity in the face of violence and horror, the sending of “thoughts and prayers”?

Joe Pepitone and the Long Shadow of Abuse

By Karl E. H. Seigfried | March 26, 2022

As painful as Joe Pepitone’s story is to read, it can be a meaningful learning experience for the wider Pagan community – especially for those of us who serve in the clergy or other leadership roles.

Column: In Defense of Unmindfulness

By Karl E. H. Seigfried | February 26, 2022

“In sports, music, and martial arts, the unbinding of the mind as it focuses upon a specific task is paired with a shutting down of other mental faculties. Senses are simply turned off in a subjectively very real way. Linear thinking evaporates as the Odinnic moment expands.

“Rather than mindfulness, this is a process of unmindfulness.”

Column: The World Tree, Heimdall, and All of Us

By Karl E. H. Seigfried | January 29, 2022

“The earth rotates around an axis drawn from the south pole, through the planet, out the north pole, and up to the pole star. With a bit of imagination, diagrams of this world axis show a trunk with roots in the earth and the pole star at the top of the leader. Old Icelandic poetry tells us of the mighty measuring tree. The growth and life of this tree parallel the growth and life of this world, and none know where to find the beginning point of its roots.”

Tarot of the Week

Tarot of the Week

Deck: Sun and Moon Tarot, by Vanessa Decort, and published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

Card: Four (4) of Swords: Truce

This week could offer up some interesting challenges that may require unexpected pivots and shifts. The need to be flexible and open to new options is likely to be highlighted, but making hasty decisions should be discouraged. Finding a balance point is liable to be key. If there is uncertainty, a step back to fully evaluate the situation is likely to be called for.

Conversely, the need to recognize that taking a break is likely to be front and center. Otherwise, expect to be forced by exhaustion to do so. Attempting to push through despite the need for rest has the potential for frustration and even burnout. Even a forced respite can allow for being more fully present mentally and emotionally and is conducive to making a clearer assessment of what is truly needed.
