We extend to your readers a Happy Thanksgiving on this holiday. We recognize the complicated nature of the holiday, from its origin as a harvest festival to the modern social gravitas of the Thanksgiving dinner.
We also recognize the impact the holiday has had on the Native cultures of the West. When Europeans stepped foot on what is now Cape Cod in the early 1600s, they met the Wampanoag people who had successfully farmed, fished and hunted the land for generations. The Wampanoag shared their food and survival techniques; and without that assistance, the colonists would have perished.
The Native people were rewarded for their kindness by being witness to a massacre and subsequently with colonization, cultural suppression, theft, and the death of millions. Fortunately today, we have begun to properly honor that original kindness and its aftermath.
Many reflect on today as a National Day of Mourning to “honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today.” It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection as well as a protest of the racism and oppression which Native Americans continue to experience.
Our Canadian neighbors and friends in Liberia already celebrated the holiday last month as did some of our German friends during Erntedankfest. But, we recognize the exportation of the holiday around the world. And so we, also wish you, a Happy Britsgiving, Día de Acción de Gracias, Festa del Ringraziamento, Turkey Day, and even, San Giving 😉.
The Wild Hunt will be taking the rest of the day off to cook and spend time with loved ones. We offer thanks to everyone who reads, comments, and supports this site.
