TWH – The 2024 TABI CARTA Awards are coming up.
The awards celebrate and recognize the excellence of divination decks of tarot and oracle cards created in 2023. While the registration period for submissions closed on March 25, the public, as well as TABI members, will be able to vote for the decks they prefer in June.
Hosted by the Tarot Association for British and International (TABI) Members, TWH spoke with Janine Worthington, the TABI Chair/Secretary for 2024, about the awards, the evolution and history of the awards, as well as their current iteration.
The Carta Awards were first established in 2011, and last year were handed off to TABI by Lara Houston and The International Tarot Foundation.
According to Worthington, “We are actually the Tarot Association for British and International Members now as we had a name change at the start of the year. I am the Chair for TABI and also the coordinator for the TABI CARTA awards. We also have a panel of 5 judges working on the awards who are based in Romania, Australia, the United States, and the UK. The awards were handed over to us by the International Tarot Foundation.”
Worthington outlined the criteria for submissions and the manner in which decks are evaluated, and ultimately, judged.
“We have changed things slightly with our marking criteria. We look at the quality of the deck, the box, the guidebook, the overall theme, and also the ‘readability’ of the cards amongst other things.”
She continued, “The deck or book needs to have been published or self-published the year before the awards, so for this one – 2023. If the deck is also a second edition we need there to have been enough changes within that edition to warrant a submission into the awards. If it is a reprint with no changes it would not be eligible.”
Worthington told TWH that the process for selecting the 2024 winners involves the judges voting to decide the top 10 submissions in each category, which is followed by a public vote conducted via the TABI website, as well as a vote by TABI members through the TABI forum.
Once the registration and submission closes on March 25, preparation and deliberation begin for voting by the judges. On June 21, the 10 selections having received the most votes by the judges are open to voting by the public until June 30. A special award will be given to the decks that accumulate the most voting by TABI members as well.
The winners will be awarded in a livestream on Saturday during the TABI Summer Conference which will be held July 19-21 in Manchester Piccadilly in the United Kingdom.
Worthington also noted, “This is our first year running it and it is already surpassing all our expectations. We are now at the 100 entry mark for decks and books which have all entered into several different categories. We would love as many people who are passionate about Tarot and Oracle decks to enter as possible, we particularly love to hear from self-published indie decks which all help to get creator’s concepts out there into the public arena.”
She pointed out that TABI was open to new members no matter what countries they might reside in, “As we now a global Tarot Association we are welcoming members from all over the world for just £20 a year membership which gains free entry into our Mid-winter online conference via Zoom, free monthly zoom Tarot sessions on the Marseille and Thoth Tarot, free Beginner and Intermediate Tarot training courses and access to our acclaimed TABI forum.”
