My last article made some people pretty angry. So, I thought I would take a moment to address those readers who may have been offended when I suggested that Witches take a stand against the current United States government’s ultranationalist policies, and specifically, the raids conducted by ICE. Some took offense when I drew a correlation between old Witch lore and the idea of advocating for the oppressed. Some saw my piece as promoting an idea that rejects “the will of the people,” and stressed that some of my readers actually voted for all this. Who am I to go against their democratically chosen wishes?
To those readers, I just want to say: die mad about it.

Words cannot convey how little I respect your opinion. By declaring that you voted for this just tells me that you are anti-democratic, as what is going on is the literal dismantling of our democratic system of checks and balances. You voted for this? Then you voted for authoritarianism, and no, I don’t respect that. I no longer want or need to hear from anyone who decided it was okay to empower a misogynistic, racist, allegedly pedophile rapist for President.
You call yourself “conservative,” but what exactly are you “conserving?” What does that descriptor even mean now, other than hating anyone non-white, non-straight, non-cisgender? And non-Christian. Make no mistake, once the Christian Nationalist base that is the Trump/MAGA movement solidifies their power, that last part is going to sting some currently very snarky “conservative” Pagans. I’m a bit surprised to see that some number of Witches have fallen into the QAnon-delusion that “politically conservative values” in the US have become, but if some of the comments I receive on social media are any indicator, here we are. (I hate this timeline.)
If these comments are to be believed, then covens of Witches for Trump are happily thriving, reminding everyone that just because someone practices Witchcraft, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are a good person. I’m not here to say that MAGA Witches aren’t real Witches… but I am saying that I don’t think they’re very smart. Or at least they wouldn’t know empathy if it bit them on their largely white, cisgender backsides.
If you were one of those who was offended by what I wrote, then let me just tell you that I don’t need or want you as a reader. Go do whatever it is that fascists do, like post on Twitter, or storm a Capitol, or drive a Cybertruck. My work is not, and will never be, for you. Don’t read my stuff. Don’t buy my books. And certainly, don’t take my classes. I neither want nor need you in my life on any level. I reject you. I dream of a world in which diversity is actively celebrated, not weaponized for racist ends.
Since my article was published, things have only escalated. ICE has continued to kidnap people off the street while refusing to identify themselves, opening the door for violent criminals to easily impersonate ICE agents in order to terrorize people of color. Several people arrested by legitimate agents have later proven to be legal US citizens who were nevertheless arrested, sometimes beaten, tear-gassed, and detained, sometimes for days. The White House flexed its muscles and deployed the National Guard and the Marines to Los Angeles, California, allegedly to assist with keeping the peace in the wake of protests there. And the so-called “Alligator Alcatraz” migrant detention center was unveiled. (Isn’t that a sassy re-brand from when we just called them concentration camps?) Now five other states are looking to use it as a model.

If you were offended, good. I hope I continue to offend you. You don’t deserve the peace of mind of believing that what you stand for is okay. It’s not. It’s disgusting and cruel and small minded, and a cancer on a free society. It is the duty of concerned citizens everywhere to stand against this, to stand against you, if indeed this is what you voted for.
But maybe – just maybe – there’s hope for you yet. I do believe that people can change, can have epiphanies and redeem themselves for their past mistakes. So I hold that hope in my heart for you. Do I think it’s likely that you’ll change? Nope. I don’t think you have it in you. But I’d love to be proven wrong.
To the vast majority of my readers: thank you for your continued support. I appreciate all the love I receive from you. It really helps keep me focused on what really matters.
