Pagan Community Notes: Week of July 11, 2024

TWH – Generally we don’t cover sports unless they are Pagan sports.  If you know of any competitions we should be covering (Pagan curlers – we’re looking at you), let us know at pcn@wildhunt.org.

But this story was, well, too bizarre to not share.

In a recent interview with ‘The Mac Life’, a magazine that covers mixed-martial arts (MMA) as well as other sports and health and fitness, Dana Frederick White Jr., the CEO and president of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC),  the largest and most prominent mixed MMA promotion company, was pulled into a debate on witchcraft.

First the backdrop, recently, on ‘The MMA Hour,’ Czech professional mixed martial artist Jiří Procházka revealed that Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and former kickboxer, Alex Sandro Silva Pereira participates in shamanic rituals to generate supernatural energy before entering a bout in the MMA Octagon. Procházka reportedly said, “Yes, everybody knows that he is doing these rituals ahead of his fight. Everybody can feel what’s around him and what’s going on. Alex can’t fight without that. It’s something that he’s been using normally in fights.”

Procházka wants to fight Pereira without any magickal interference.  They competed on June 30, 2024, in Las Vegas.

Pereira, however, did not deny the accusations. Instead, he embraced them, expressing his belief that people have a spiritual side. “Everyone has their own spirits. We’re not only made of flesh and bone. I have found mine. If he hasn’t found his or doesn’t believe, that’s not my fault,” he said.

When White was asked if the MMA Promotion tests for Witchcraft and similar practices, he was exuberant.  “I don’t know. I love that s**t though. So, when Jiri found out about the fight, apparently he goes into a shed for 3 days. No water, no food, no nothing. And prays or meditates, whatever he does. So, apparently his coach went banged on the door and told him this fight was available and he said something to the effect of ‘if this is what the universe wants,’ you know.”

White said, “So, he is that dude. He sees him doing the shaman stuff or whatever or chama or whatever the f**k it is, he’s like this is unfair, he’s using witchcraft, or whatever f**king black magic. It is just another reason why this fight is so f**king awesome.”

The Christian site Movieguide® is very worried again citing Biblical verses about witchcraft, sorcery, idolatry, and, of course, debauchery.  Despite the site’s general name,  Movieguide® is a website and publication that reviews movies, television shows, and other forms of entertainment from a Christian perspective. Its mission is to provide reviews and information to help families make informed decisions about what content is appropriate for their values and beliefs.

Unsurprisingly, Movieguide® is concerned again because “the upcoming Disney+ show AGATHA ALL ALONG will promote dangerous occult themes, including witchcraft.”  Movieguide issues its usual: ” WARNING! DISNEY PROMOTES DANGEROUS OCCULT THEMES IN MARVEL SPIN-OFF.”

All the more reason to watch.

For those unfamiliar, Agatha Harkness is a character in Marvel Comics, known as a powerful witch with a long history in the Marvel Universe. She first appeared in “Fantastic Four” #94 in 1970 and was recently featured in WandaVision.

“In Agatha All Along, the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they’re missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road…” writes Disney in the new show’s overview.

The Agatha All Along teaser was released this week.  Kathryn Hahn reprises her role as Agatha, and is joined on the cast by Aubrey Plaza, Patti LuPone, Joe Locke, and Debra Jo Rupp.  As Agatha says, “the gang’s all here!”

Agatha All Along will be available for the Halloween Season on Disney+. The show premieres on September 18, 2024.

Andrea Joy, a clergy member of the Covenant of the Goddess,  has been doing an extraordinary review of Witchcraft and Wicca using the TikTok platform as @cog_tiktoc noting “We work together to empower Witches & Wiccans to enrich our World.”

After creating dozens of videos explaining Wicca and Witchcraft including weekly shows called “Tuesday’s Topic”, Joy announced a short break.  In her usual manner, she empowered the viewer  with her catchphrase, “All the power you need is within you!”

Tarot of the Week by Star Bustamonte

Deck: The Cosmo Tarot, by Sarah Potter, published by Hearst Magazine Media, Inc.

Card: Major arcana – The Moon

This week there is likely to be a focus on looking for what lies beneath the surface. It is quite possible that what is observed at first glance is not an accurate depiction of any given situation. The need to delve deeper may very well play a prominent role.

Contrarily, continuing to seek a different outcome or rewrite history when the facts have already been revealed will not alter the need to take appropriate action. To do otherwise is liable to only make the situation worse and more untenable.
