Pagan Community Notes: Week of May 9, 2024

TWH – The Fellowship of Fire & Ice is proud to announce the final approval and release of our Statement of Purpose and Nine Principles of Unity. These founding documents summarize our organization’s core values, will be the foundation for the Fellowship’s bylaws, define how all of our volunteer service councils and collectives operate, and guide the overall goals and objectives of the Fellowship. This critical step is all thanks to the work of our volunteers and the input of our community. We look forward to continuing down the road to incorporation as a religious organization and convening the first Fellowship Althing.

The Provisional Board will also be releasing our new membership application in the next week. Members will enjoy voting rights and other benefits as the Fellowship and means to better serve our community grow.  The statement of purpose reads,

BIRMINGHAM, England – Ogham is an ancient writing system used primarily to write the early Irish language and other Celtic languages. It consists of a series of linear characters made up of strokes or notches that are carved or inscribed on stone, wood, or metal. Ogham was used predominantly in Ireland and western parts of Britain during the early medieval period, roughly between the 4th and 7th centuries AD.

The characters in Ogham are composed of lines or notches arranged along a central line with lines added by adding slashes or modifying the basic shapes. Ogham inscriptions are primarily found on stone monuments, particularly gravestones and boundary markers, although they also appear on other materials such as manuscripts and jewelry.

The exact origins and development of Ogham are not entirely clear, but it is believed to have evolved from earlier forms of symbolic writing systems used by the Celts.

Ogham continues to hold significance in modern Celtic spirituality and is most notable in modern Paganisms for its association with the Druids, both ancient and contemporary.

The Irish Times reported yesterday that, while tidying his overgrown garden in Coventry, England, a geography teacher, Graham Senior, came across a rock adorned with Ogham writing. He photographed the discovery and shared it with a local archaeologist, who determined that the inscriptions dated back over 1,600 years.

Seniors said, “I was just clearing a flower bed of weeds and stones when I saw this thing and thought, that’s not natural, that’s not scratchings of an animal. It can’t have been more than four or five inches below the surface.”

Katherine Forsyth, a professor of Celtic Studies at the University of Glasgow. Forsyth confirmed the script as Ogham, indicating an early style likely dating back to the Fifth to the Sixth Century common era, possibly even as early as the Fourth Century.

The discovery is especially notable because it was found outside Ireland and Scotland. Archaeologist Teresa Gilmore of Birmingham Museums explained that the find is  “very rare,”  adding that objects with Ogham “have generally been found in Ireland or Scotland … so to find them in the [English] midlands is actually unusual.”

The inscribed stone has been transferred to the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry where Curator Ali Wells described it as “really quite incredible.”   The object will soon be on display at the museum as a permanent donation by Senior.

As for the inscription, the object appears to refer to a name, “Mael Dumcail,” and apparently identifies a place “S/Lass” afterward.

Bambie Thug, is an Irish singer-songwriter renowned for their eclectic blend of musical genres. Rejecting categorization, they coined the term “Ouija-pop” to describe their unique style, which draws inspiration from a diverse range of influences including breakups, witchcraft, and drug addiction.

Bambi Thug has been described as “Goth Gaga.”  They are a member of our community noting they practice Witchcraft specializing in sigil and manifestation magic.  Bambie Thus has said that Witchcraft heavily influences their music, with several songs incorporating spells and hexes including their own sigils, one of which serves as their official logo.

Bambie Thug will be representing Ireland in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, securing a place at the annual event after winning the Irish national final, with their song “Doomsday Blue.” Since their victory in Eurosong 2024. Bambie Thug and their song have garnered extensive media attention, particularly within the Irish media, eliciting praise and, unsurprisingly, criticism for their spiritual practices.

The next seven days are apt to offer opportunities for change. How those opportunities are embraced could provide the keys for advancing a promising financial shift, and other major life decisions. There is also a reminder here to be mindful that what comes around, goes around and to have a little faith in one’s own discernment.

In contrast, there is the potential for getting stuck in a negative cycle or downward spiral. Choosing to adopt an approach that addresses head-on changes in order to mitigate negative impacts and change course is liable to be crucial to breaking free.
