Pagan Community Notes: Week of March 7, 2022

TWH – Tomorrow marks the 111th International Women’s Day which traces its official beginnings to 1911, but was born out of the women’s labor movement in the U.S. In 1908, over 15,000 women working in the garment industry took to the streets in New York City to demand better wages, shorter working days, and the right to vote.

The first International Women’s Day was officially celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland in 1911. In 1977 the United Nations officially marked March 8 to recognize and celebrate the many accomplishments of women around the globe and throughout history.

A number of events are scheduled for tomorrow, including a virtual event by the U.N. Women with the theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” that will feature a variety of speakers, including Jane Goodall, author and environmentalist Katharine Wilkinson, and climate justice activist Maria Reyes.

The event runs from 10:00 –11:30 am or UTC-5. U.N. Women describe the event as:

The year 2022 is pivotal for achieving gender equality in the context of climate change, and environmental and disaster risk reduction, which are some of the greatest global challenges of the twenty-first century. Without gender equality today, a sustainable future, and an equal future, remains beyond our reach.

This year’s IWD observance is in recognition and celebration of the women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation and response, and to honour their leadership and contribution towards a sustainable future.

Selena Fox with Circle Sanctuary will celebrate the day by live-streaming an online Goddess Spirituality Ritual tomorrow from 10-10:30 am eastern, (15:00 – 15:30 UTC) from her Facebook page.

Last week, a post on Instagram by Stevie Nicks condemning Putin and his actions made headlines. Many Pagan commenters viewed her words as a hex or curse.

Nicks wrote, “Are you lonely Mr. Putin? Is that why you sit alone at your long, long, marble, table alone in the night and through the day ~ And talk to ghosts~”

She continues on highlighting his inability to appreciate anything good around him, isolated and friendless except for the company of ghosts. But is perhaps the end of her post that most draws upon the element of baneful intent:

“I hope the history books in your country cease to ever write another word about you~
I hope you turn to dust…
I hope you become invisible.
I hope you become ‘the forgotten one’~
And that you become a ‘complete unknown ~
With no direction or home…'”

“The ghost are coming Mr. Putin. They’re coming for you.
Perhaps they are already here…”

    Gareth Knight – April 3, 1930 – March 1, 2022

Gareth Knight died peacefully at home on the evening of March 1. Born Basil Leslie Wilby in Colchester, England, Knight would go on to study the work of Dion Fortune and be initiated into the Society of the Inner Light in 1954.

By the 1960s, Knight took on the role of honorary part-time librarian for the Society and would see his first book, A Practical Guide to Qabalistic Symbolism published, as well taking on the job of editing the new bi-monthly magazine, New Dimensions. It was during this period that together with William E. Butler, he co-founded the publishing house, Helios Books.

Together, Knight and Butler also launched a correspondence course in 1964 – the Helios Course on the Practical Qabalah. At this time he also left the Society as he felt they were moving too far away from the Hermetic work that was a large part of Fortune’s foundational practice. He would later rejoin the Society in the 1990s and help to guide them in re-establishing some of the original teachings, as well as editing some of Fortune’s letters and writings for publication.

In 1973 Knight founded his own magical fraternity, the Gareth Knight Group, which he introduced at Hawkwood College in Stroud, Gloucestershire. He held open magical weekends that were open to anyone, a tradition that had influenced many and that Caitlin Matthews wrote about in 2013.

The Helios correspondence course evolved in the Servants of the Light under the guidance of the Director of Studies, Delores Ashcroft Nowicki, and is now an internationally recognized esoteric and magical institution.

Knight would go on to publish dozens of titles, many of which helped the standard for Western magical and occult practices that included, Experience of the Inner Worlds (1975), Dion Fortune and the Inner Light (2000), Esoteric Training in Everyday Life (2013), and even The Gareth Knight Tarot Deck (1984).

Remembrances of Knight across social media reflected the profound impact his work had on many who have chosen an esoteric and magical path. Many commenters remembered him fondly and with affection, noting how much they had gained from his teachings that were often referred to as “life-changing.”

    What is remembered, lives!

    Positively Noteworthy

Break The Bias is part of the theme of gender equality for International Women’s Day 2022.

“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality.

    “Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.”

Card: Major arcana, X (10), Wheel of Fortune: Elizabeth I

The week ahead may be a bit like a kaleidoscope of cascading changes and shifts, with a side order of luck. Change is unavoidable. Managing responses to change and preparedness will be key this week.

Conversely, lack of awareness and failure to gather the necessary knowledge required could lead to undesired consequences and outcomes.
