A tarot spread for 2022

TWH asked our resident tarot expert and news editor, Star Bustamonte, to give a spiritual look ahead and she took up the challenge. Star does our Card for the Week feature in Pagan Community Notes. So, we asked for a 12-month spiritual perspective for the year ahead that might provide some helpful signposts for guidance as we move into 2022. A different deck was chosen for each month, with one card being selected to provide an overview or basic theme for that month, similar to our Tarot of the Week but more broadly applied.

JanuaryEveryday Witch Tarot by Deborah Blake, artwork by Elisabeth Alba, published by Llewellyn Publications

Card: Ace of Wands

The first month of the calendar year is likely to offer opportunities that allow for the expression of creativity, the potential for financial success, and claiming or reclaiming one’s power. Be mindful that some pathways for success and forward momentum may carry an expiration date and the ability to “strike while the iron is hot” will be paramount.

Conversely, failure to act or giving away the power to choose is unlikely to yield the desired results.

FebruaryAfrican-American Tarot by Jamal B., artwork by Thomas Davis, published by Lo Scarabeo

Card: Seven (7) of Cups

In contrast to the previous month, February will likely be more introspective and focused on self-evaluation and -criticism. There may also be an underlying current of commitment, dedication, and both the need and desire to wait for a more complete picture before taking action.

Contrarily, decisions and actions taken without proper planning or real conviction may result in failure, loss, or the inability to advance.

MarchOstara Tarot by Molly Applejohn, Eden Cooke, Krista Gibbard, and Julia Iredale, published by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd.

Card: Major arcana, The Fool (0)

The month of the Vernal Equinox is likely to hold opportunities for new adventures for those willing to throw off the shackles of conventionality. While no choice is without consequence, the ability to listen to and trust inner guidance is likely to be key in navigating the month.

On the other hand, completely throwing caution to the wind or ignoring warning signs could lead to challenges and obstacles that may be insurmountable or cause real harm.

AprilThe Bohemian Animal Tarot by Scott Alexander King, illustrations by Sharon McLeod, published by Rockpool Publishing

Card: Major arcana, The Innocent (0)

If opportunities for adventure, new beginnings, and a fresh start were missed in the previous month, April may offer an unusual second chance. Expect the unexpected, and dare to dream.

Contrarily, following one’s heart and desires can result in ending up in unfamiliar and hostile territory for those who are less than pure in intent.

MayTarot of the Cat People by Karen Kuykendall, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

Card: Major arcana, The Star (XVII)

The energy of the fifth month is liable to be more stable than the two previous months with a focus on balance between work and play, past and present, and determination and hope. There is an underlying note of optimism and a general sense of good things being possible.

Conversely, refusal to see the merits of balance may lead to instability, pessimism, and missing longed-for opportunities.

JuneWhite Sage Tarot by Theresa Hutch, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

Card: Ace of Cups

This month is likely to offer new emotional beginnings and the promise of positive connections. It also signals a reminder to approach situations with an open heart.

Be mindful that the potential of an openness to new emotional attachments can result in triggering past traumas and result in hesitancy. Due consideration may be warranted.

JulyThe Tarot of the Bones by Lupa

Card: Queen of Cups

Balance is likely to be a key element of July, as well as presenting an abundance of goodwill, generosity, and sharing. There are also likely to be emotional overtones leaning more towards the positive.

Conversely, the potential for imbalance and neediness can not only be toxic but can also attract more of the same.

AugustThe Divine Canine Tarot by Zack Loup

Card: Page of Swords

The last month of summer may be the most enthusiastic of the year and may carry an almost jubilant air. There is the potential for the development of new ideas that reflect embracing intellectual pursuits and study.

On the other hand, too much enthusiasm can be bad a thing and result in looking before leaping, trying to do much, and neglecting to ask for help.

SeptemberDreams of Gaia Tarot (Pocket Edition) by Ravynne Phelan, published by Blue Angel Publishing

Card: King of Earth XIV

The energy of the ninth month is liable to largely be that of industriousness, with a side order of dependability. It is also likely to have success and prosperity interwoven throughout.

Be mindful that trying to make major shifts, slacking off on work, or misusing authority are likely to come back to bite the posterior.

OctoberDark Wood Tarot by Sasha Graham, art by Abigail Larson, published by Llewellyn Publications

Card: Ace of Pentacles

October may offer renewed possibilities and ideas for prosperity and ways to move forward. The potential exists for a shift in vision allowing for a more complete picture.

Conversely, failure to see and accept new approaches, ignoring portents and signs, and a lack of gratitude may result in feeling hollow and dissatisfied.

NovemberSanta Muerte Tarot: Book of the Dead by Fabio Listrani, published by Lo Scarabeo

Card: Nine (9) of Wands

The eleventh month is liable to require a full-court press in order to achieve success. The ability to be strong in the face of adversity and knowing when to cut loose what no longer serves is key.

Be aware that complications and opposition may cause delays, but remaining diligent and staying true to core values will allow for perseverance.

DecemberDancing in the Dark Tarot by Gianfranco Pereno and Lunaea Weatherstonepublished by Lo Scarabeo

Card: Three (3) of Pentacles

The final month of the calendar year is likely to be underlined by cooperation and the importance of what can be created when a community is united. There is an emphasis on the “hands being empowered by the strength of the soul.”

Be mindful that while an individual can accomplish much, accepting and even encouraging the help and assistance of others can multiple accomplishments greatly.

We wish everyone much peace and many blessings in the year ahead.
