OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. – Chants of protest and support filled the lobby just steps away from the Ottawa County board podium, where a leader of a West Michigan satanic group led the commissioners in prayer during Tuesday night’s meeting.
“With truth as our guide, let falsehood perish. Its end is assured. Hail Satan. Thank you, and may everyone have a wonderful evening,” said Luis Cypher, representing the Satanic Temple of West Michigan, as he stood confidently amid a crowded room. Cypher extended greetings to residents and commissioners before delivering the opening invocation.
Ottawa County residents expressed their beliefs and criticized the presence of the Satanic temple. “Tonight, you have failed in your primary responsibility. By adhering to a flawed tradition, you have allowed worship not only to a false ideal of human creation but to the greatest enemy of the all-good God who granted you these positions,” one resident declared while holding a cross.
Crossings of the Veil
We were saddened to hear that High Priest Richard James crossed the Veil on the morning of April 13, 2024.
In the late 1970s and 1980s, Richard and Tamarra opened their home to a burgeoning Pagan community, providing a welcoming and secure environment for gatherings. Richard’s tutelage shaped some of the most adept priesthood members, who carry forward his passion and reverence for the Gods.
Richard, accompanied by his wife and High Priestess Tamarra James, established the Occult Shop in Toronto and founded the Wiccan Church of Canada in 1979. Through their public rituals, Richard and Tamara welcomed many individuals to Paganism and Wicca. They remained active into the 2000s, participating in events like the Parliament of World Religions.
Richard was a multifaceted individual. As a High Priest, his devotion to the Gods shone brightly in the rituals he conducted. He served as a mentor and influencer to numerous Pagans, both within the WCC and throughout the wider Pagan community.
Richard’s teachings inspired the growth of Paganism not only in Ontario but across Canada. He advocated for Pagan rights, enlightened non-Pagans, and offered guidance to those in the Federal Prison system seeking connection with their deities.

The next seven days may offer up opportunities to count one’s blessings, as well as reflection on how the fruits of labor can provide nourishment for generations to come. There is also the potential focus on inheritance—both those received and those yet to be bestowed.
Contrarily, concerns over finances and security may be of concern, particularly if resources have been squandered due to poor decision making. Past family issues or scandals also have the potential to be revisited and even revealed to a larger audience.
