Pagan Community Notes: Week of February 22, 2024

BIRMINGHAM, England – Last week, The Staffordshire Wildlife Trust announced the unveiling of a river goddess statue at the confluence of the rivers Mease, Tame, and Trent near Alrewas, north of Birmingham.  The statue was commissioned and installed in the at Croxall Lakes nature reserve by the Transforming the Trent Valley Trust (TTTV).

The statue is in honor of Trisentona, the Goddess of the River Trent.

In ancient Britain, rivers were perceived as embodiments of the feminine divine, with each river representing a goddess. The spiritual entity associated with this particular site was called Trisentona, meaning the thrice beloved, eventually abbreviated to Trent over time.

The ancient inhabitants of Britain, prior to the Christian era, embraced the concept of genius loci, attributing a spirit or deity to various natural features such as trees, springs, mountains, and rivers. The convergence of these three rivers played a pivotal role in the genesis of the triple goddess, symbolized through the establishment of the neolithic Catholme Ceremonial Complex as a commemoration of this sacred birthplace. Consequently, the river itself came to embody the goddess, and conversely, the goddess became a representation of the river.

Dr. Mark Knight, Cultural Heritage Officer for TTTV, said: “We are really pleased to bring Trisentona to life. The sculpture will enable visitors to Croxall Lakes to learn more about the site’s history and deepen their connection with the landscape around them.”

He anticipates that this artistic representation will serve as an educational tool for visitors to Croxall Lakes, enabling them to delve into the site’s historical significance and fostering a deeper connection with the surrounding landscape. The reserve boasts a 26-acre lake, drawing in significant populations of wildfowl and wading birds such as teal and oystercatcher.

Expressing gratitude to sculptors Miranda Wakeman and Geraint Lloyd for their remarkable depiction of Trisentona, Jeff Sim, Reserves Manager at Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, added that the sculpture is now a focal point of the area that complements the Croxall Lakes nature reserve.

Tom Lanting, part of Gemini Aspect and LGBTQI+ officer for the Scottish Pagan Federation for the past 8 years, announced a new book to become available on March 1 from Green Magic Publishing. Lanting is an Australian-born Pagan who has lived in Scotland for the past 22 years. In 2021 with support from the presiding officer of S.P.F., he created the first officially registered Pagan tartan.

From the Prologue Lanting quotes John Macintyre, a previous presiding officer of the Scottish Pagan Federation, “Paganism has always celebrated diversity in both human beings and in Nature generally as good in itself, and the Equalities agenda has always been rooted in respect for diversity. Paganism is not homophobic.  It does not encourage prejudice against gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered people, and values all adult, consensual and loving relationships equally. Paganism and Equalities have always made a good fit. Consequently, from the very beginning, the Scottish Pagan Federation did not discriminate on grounds of sexual orientation or gender and welcomed same-sex couples, and also polyamorous group relationships, as Joint Members on the same basis as everyone else.

Card: King of Cups – Heitsi-Eibib (deified hero who defeated Gagorib – South Africa)

The next seven days are liable to be centered on creativity, as well as the ability to balance emotion with logical and critical thinking in order to solve issues. There is also the potential of being in a position to help others attain success.

Conversely, attempting to suppress feelings and not address them head-on is likely to result in unexpected and uncontrollable outbursts of emotion.
