Pagan Community Notes: Week of September 11, 2023

Before we review the great work and activities of our community, we take a moment to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

What is remembered, lives.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken wrote:

The memory of those who perished on 9/11 reminds us of why we must continue to fight against those who commit acts of terrorism. In the years since, we have stood side by side with partners from around the world to end the scourge of terrorism and ensure terrorists are held accountable for their crimes.

Rev. Selena Fox shared a remembrance for healing and peace.

We also take a moment to remind our readers that the World Trade Center Health Program offers “no-cost medical monitoring and treatment for certified WTC-related health conditions to those directly affected by the 9/11 attacks in New York, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania,” as well as providing funding for “medical research into physical and mental health conditions related to 9/11 exposures.”

MIAMI –  Everglades Moon Local Council (EMLC) is an affiliation of covens and solitary members of the Covenant of the Goddess (CoG) who live in Florida. The Covenant of the Goddess is an advocacy organization that seeks to foster cooperation amongst Wiccans and Witches, secure legal protection, provide education through outreach, and nurture its members through dialog and community. It was founded in 1975.

As EMLC notes, “A Local Council is a smaller branch of the Covenant, consisting of at least three member covens of at least two different traditions, in reasonably close geographic proximity to each other. The Local Councils meet at least twice a year and usually more often. They may choose to initiate independent projects, sponsor local festivals and workshops, and generally work together for common goals close to home.”

The EMLC met this weekend at its annual meeting and forwarded a press release soon after:

EMLC  has determined that it is consistent with our mission and beneficial to us locally, to create our own diversity statement beyond what CoG National may adopt.  At our annual meeting on Saturday, we agreed upon our statement for publication:

Everglades Moon Local Council is a diverse and inclusive organization for Wiccans and Witches of all Traditions. Whatever the gods have gifted you with, you are welcome here. We seek to be an organization that helps to manifest a more just and equitable world for all.

Washington State’s Pagan Pride Day is Sept 30/Oct 1, 2023, at the LaQuinta in Tacoma, WA.

This is our 17th year, and after two years of broadcasting online events with some of the most respected names in the Pagan community, we are back in person! Please join us and the many vendors, readers, and a fantastic lineup of presenters.

Special guest presenters include @ThatWitchLife podcast, who will record an episode for their internationally-known weekly podcast. The show is hosted by Kanani Soleil, Courtney Weber, and Hilary Whitmore and focuses on living as a Witch or Magickal person today.

We are delighted to have Brittany Jones, a presidential candidate for the US 2024 election. Brittany Jones is an unaffiliated candidate for the 2024 presidential elections. She is taking the knowledge she has learned from her campaign and helping educate people across the United States about how elections work. She has been a practicing Pagan, primarily doing dream work, for the last ten years. She also practices candle magic and energy manipulation. Please visit her website to learn more. Puget Sound Pagan Pride has invited other presidential candidates in the spirit of openness and fairness to all. Organizers said they also need volunteers. Contact them for details.

Earthspirit Community announced dates and open registration for Twilight Covening, a continuous  3-day ritual from October 6-9, 2023 that holds and shapes an institute of Earth spirituality and a time to develop our collective wisdom in a shared sacred space as we move into the dark time of the year.

Each year since 1986, members of the EarthSpirit Community gather deep into ourselves and into communion with this time of year and with all of Nature. We explore the depths of a range of spiritual practices, learn new skills together and experience the joy and power of a living community ritual. We invite you to join us.

The rituals include Releasing Fire Ritual on Friday night, Rituals for Dreaming, Healing and Trance on Saturday night, A Visioning Ritual on Sunday night, and Four “Attunements” each day which marks the solar quarters of the day.

Many participants have found that Twilight Covening provides a model for maintaining an earth-centered practice on a daily basis and is a wonderful opportunity for developing strong and lasting connections with others on a similar path.

They note that Twilight Covening is a demanding physical experience. The schedule is intense, the terrain rugged, the weather unpredictable and the facilities limited in creature comforts.

Positively Noteworthy

In a momentous and historic conservation achievement, a group of eighteen takahē birds has been reintroduced into the untamed wilderness of a nature reserve located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.

This promising development is expected to be followed by the release of an additional seven birds in October, with another 10 slated for release in the early months of next year. This marks a significant step in the ongoing effort to restore this remarkable species to the wild, as it strives to establish a third distinct breeding population.

The takahē, once declared extinct, vanished from the scene during a time when the sight of an automobile in London was still a novelty.

This colorful and flightless bird, with its iridescent plumage, serves as a symbol of New Zealand’s unique prehistoric heritage. It originally evolved on an island devoid of mammals, but the introduction of invasive species posed a grave threat to its very existence.

Conservationists reared chicks with sock puppets in the shape of adult takahē heads while also clearing the land of invasive predators.  The birds were released onto Ngāi Tahu (the principal Māori iwi of the South Island) tribal lands to welcomes and prayers.

Tarot of the Week by Star Bustamonte

Deck: Celestial Tarot, by Kay Steventon and Brian Clark, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

Card: Major arcana V (5) – The Hierophant – Taurus

This week is liable to stir up an intense desire for the pursuit of self-knowledge and greater understanding of the surrounding world while maintaining the ability to be grounded and balanced.

Conversely, allowing the focus to be solely on physical pleasures and passions could result in missing opportunities for greater awareness and spiritual growth.
