Notes from Swannanoa: stories of resilience, destruction, and elemental change

By Sheri Barker | October 13, 2024

The storm’s energy had intensified and like any good, curious, slightly feral Witch, I wanted to meet it in person. The glass wind chimes hanging on the front porch were jangling madly, making a discordant sound that was the first indication of how bad things were.

Sheri Barker continues her exploration of the classical elements in this column about the power of fire.

I looked around, trying to find the chimes, and saw a woman walking towards me from the east. Tall and graceful, she carried a book in the bend of her arm. She wore a long, flowing gown of pale green, pale yellow, and white. The chiming grew louder as she drew near, but the sound remained pleasing.

As she passed by, I asked, “Do you hear that sound?”

She laughed in a way that echoed the chimes and answered, “The question is: do you?”

Tarot of the Week

Tarot of the Week

Deck: Golden Black Cat Tarot,by Helena de Almeida, published by AGM-Urania/Konigsfurt-Urania Verlog GmbH

Card: Ten (10) of Pentacles

This week, there is likely to be an emphasis on financial security, family, traditions, and the culture they are derived from. Awareness of the importance of honesty and respect within relationships and familial structures is also likely to be a focal point. It may also signal that a project or body of work has reached a successful completion.

Conversely, the potential for reconsidering what is valued, as well as the actual emotional, mental, and spiritual price(s) of continually pursuing financial gains and wealth. There also exists the possibility of financial loss, and insecurity as it applies to family, finances, and relationships.
