Nationwide 50501 protests against Trump administration planned Feb 5, 2025

MIAMI – The Wild Hunt received a long series of tips from readers about an upcoming nationwide protest. The 50501 Movement—short for “50 states, 50 protests, one day”—is gaining traction on social media as it mobilizes nationwide demonstrations against fascism, set to take place on February 5, 2025.

From what we have learned a grassroots movement appears to have originated on Reddit, where a user proposed a nationwide demonstration. The idea quickly gained traction, drawing in supporters with varying levels of organizing experience.  The central hub for discussion is the subreddit r/50501, where users are sharing information and coordinating efforts. The organizers emphasized repeatedly that they are doing everything possible to ensure a well-coordinated and peaceful demonstration. Organizers underscored “VIOLENCE OF ANY KIND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.”

As the movement has grown, more experienced organizers have stepped in, highlighting the importance of logistical considerations. While a permit is not required for the protest, organizers now recognize that securing one could be beneficial. Additionally, despite a collective commitment to peaceful and loving demonstrations, discussions have turned to de-escalation strategies. Organizers are exploring collaborations with trained groups to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the event.

The 50501 protests intend to voice serve as a direct national rejection of Project 2025 and its recent implementation through presidential executive orders by the Trump administration. Social media posts promoting the 50501 protests highlight their purpose: to oppose Project 2025, the Trump administration, and perceived threats to fundamental freedoms and human rights. The demonstrations aim to advocate for free speech, racial equality, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, public health and safety, gun violence prevention, climate action, and wealth equity.

There has been growing resentment to the recent actions of the Trump administration. During the past weekend, the majority of media attention has focused on tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canada, China, and Mexico.  However, numerous protests spread across the U.S.  last week in response to President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, which includes mass deportations and widespread raids targeting undocumented immigrants. The administration has pledged to conduct the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.

The 50501 Movement protests are now organizing, not only on reddit but a new website has emerged: 50501 Movement with a countdown.  Updates are also being circulated on Bluesky and Instagram.

Organizers have been noting that the First Amendment protects the right to assemble and express views through protest. However, law enforcement and government officials can impose certain restrictions, including issuing dispersal orders if a protest poses a risk of riot or disorder. Marchers do not need a permit to protest on sidewalks or streets, provided they do not obstruct traffic.  They also note that counter-protesters may appear and note they too have the right to have their voices heard.

Three teams appear to be organizing:  Those who can join an on-site protest and those who join from their homes and those “anywhere you can”.  The first team is “Protest in-person at your state capitol. We are recommending 4 pm, but time will vary based on state.”   Organizers noted, “You can find more information, including getting in touch with your local organizers and safe protesting practices on r/50501 or join the conversation on discord.”

“For those who cannot attend the protests at their capitol, we ask that you boldly demonstrate your solidarity through economic and symbolic actions,”  organizers noted.   “For those who are unable to make themselves and their homes visible due to risks to personal safety or other limits, we ask you to join with us by making yourselves INVISIBLE. Show what the country is like without your valuable contributions and labor, and develop your understanding of your essential role”

Various posts have noted that the 50501 protests are intended to be self-organizing, spreading organically as an idea while encouraging new leaders to step up and make decisions for their respective states. While some states appear well-organized, others face last-minute confusion, with many still seeking clarity on meeting times and expressing concerns over legitimacy and potential counter-protesters.

There is growing unease among participants, with some worried that many protesters assume their legal right to assemble will protect them, despite acknowledging the increasing authoritarian climate. Others fear the demonstrations could become a trap, putting participants in danger. Concerns have also been raised about potential infiltrators causing disruptions that might justify a harsh crackdown. While many still believe the protests should go forward, they stress the importance of being prepared for potential confrontations, including the use of pepper spray and rubber bullets by law enforcement.

At the time of publication, the following demonstrations appear to have been scheduled:

Editorial Note (2/3/2025 19:19 EST): Unconfirmed reports are circulating on social media that some actors may be undermining protests.  Organizers have noted that if no organizer is listed for an event, participants should proceed with caution.  They reminded everyone again that information is available on https://www.reddit.com/r/50501/
