			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are times when you just can&#8217;t get to the computer for several hours per day to blog, one of those is when you&#8217;re trying to pack and engage in a cross-country move. This week I&#8217;ll be pulling up stakes and moving from the Midwest (Milwaukee) to the Pacific Northwest (specifically, Eugene, Oregon). But don&#8217;t despair! While I&#8217;ll be driving through Montana with my wife and two cats (two, upset, angry, cats), The Wild Hunt will be featuring a wide assortment of vibrant, challenging, and innovative voices from within (and occasionally from without) modern Paganism while I&#8217;m gone. <p>Dr. Brendan Myers, Ph.D. is the author of <a href="http://www.wildideas.net/cathbad/books.html"> several critically acclaimed books</a> on the subject of ethics and philosophy, environmentalism, Celtic and European mythology, folklore, society and politics, and spirituality. They have been used as inspirational and  educational resources by college professors, social activist groups, interfaith groups,  Celtic cultural associations, and even humanist societies, in many countries around the world. Brendan&#8217;s work has appeared in numerous magazines, podcasts, and radio shows (including  America&#8217;s NPR). He is the 2008 recipient of OBOD&#8217;s prestigious  <a href="http://www.druidry.org/modules.php?op=modload&amp;name=PagEd&amp;file=index&amp;topic_id=2&amp;page_id=83"> Mt. Haemus Award</a> for recent research in Druidry.</p>

<p><span>Elysia</span> Gallo is an Acquisitions Editor at <a href="http://www.llewellyn.com">Llewellyn Worldwide</a>, the oldest and largest independent New Age publisher in the United States. She acquires books for publication in such topics as Witchcraft, Wicca, Paganism, magic(k), herbalism, and the paranormal. She lives in St. Paul, MN with her husband and two cats.</p>

<p>Wiccan since the late ’80s, Cat Chapin-Bishop has also been Quaker since 2001. Cat’s essays have appeared in Laura Wildman’s <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Celebrating-Pagan-Soul-Laura-Wildman/dp/0806526246">“Celebrating the Pagan Soul”</a>, <a href="http://www.equinoxjournals.com/ojs/index.php/POM">“The Pomegranate: The Journal of Pagan Studies”</a>, the Covenant of the Goddess newsletter, and <a href="http://www.herodotus.com/home.htm">“Enchante: The Journal for the Urbane Pagan”</a>.  In addition to her work as a Wiccan HPs, Cat is the former Chair of <a href="http://cherryhillseminary.org/">Cherry Hill Seminary’s</a> Pastoral Counseling Department, and she currently serves on the Ministry and Worship Committee of Mt. Toby Quaker meeting. Cat and her husband maintain <a href="http://quakerpagan.blogspot.com/">Quaker Pagan Reflections</a>, a blog dedicated to exploring the connections between Pagan spirituality and Quaker practice. They reside in Northampton, Massachusetts, where they attempt to live peacefully in the midst of chaos.</p>

She&#8217;s also the co-author of <em><a href="http://www.kinkmagic.com/">&#8220;Kink Magic: Sex Magic Beyond Vanilla&#8221;</a></em> with <a href="http://www.thegreenwolf.com/taylor.html">Taylor Ellwood</a>, and a contributor to the <em><a href="http://www.thegreenwolf.com/mote.html">&#8220;Magick on the Edge&#8221;</a></em> anthology and <em><a href="http://www.thegreenwolf.com/wm.html">&#8220;Manifesting Prosperity: A Wealth Magic Anthology&#8221;</a></em>. Additionally, Lupa works as an associate editor, layout tech, and nonfiction publicity/promotions manager for <a href="http://www.immanion-press.com/">Immanion Press/Megalithica Books</a>. Lupa uses the term pagan for simplicity&#8217;s sake, though more accurately she describes herself as a totemist, an animist and a pantheist. <p>John Morehead is a researcher, writer, and speaker in intercultural studies, new religious movements, theology and popular culture. He has an M.A. degree in intercultural studies from Salt Lake Theological Seminary which included a thesis on Burning Man Festival. He also has an avid interest in aspects of pop culture, particularly myth and archetype as well as the social, cultural and religious dimensions of fantasy, sci fi,and horror. <p><strong>July 19th</strong> -<a href="http://mythkenner.com/"> Caroline Kenner</a></p>
<p><!-- 		@page { margin: 0.79in } 		P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->A longtime Washington D.C. activist in in feminism and environmentalism, Caroline Kenner now uses her skills to advocate for modern Pagans. In 2006 and 2007 Kenner called pan-Pagan rallies in Washington D.C. to demand religious freedom and equality. The 2007 rally was particularly auspicious as it celebrated the recently-won right to place the Pentacle, equivalent to the Cross, Star, or Crescent, on military grave markers. The event united several large Pagan organizations working to establish Pagan military chaplains and the approval of other specific Pagan symbols worn by Pagan and Heathen veterans. In addition to her activism, Caroline is a graduate of <a href="http://www.shamanism.org/">The Foundation for Shamanic Studies</a>&#8216; Three Year Program in Advanced Shamanism and Shamanic Healing. Caroline also holds an A.B. from Bryn Mawr College and a M.S. from Boston University. She has practiced shamanism since 1989.</p>
<p><strong>July 20th</strong> -<a href="http://www.chasclifton.com"> Chas Clifton</a></p>
<p>Chas S. Clifton has been blogging since 2003, when he converted his Pagan magazine column, “Letter from Hardscrabble Creek,” into <a href="http://www.chasclifton.com/blogger.html">a blog</a>. A widely published <a href="http://www.chasclifton.com/">Pagan writer</a>, he is the author of <a href="http://www.tinyurl.com/gkaoq/"><em>“Her Hidden Children: The Rise of Wicca and Paganism in America”</em></a>. <p>James R. French has been interested in Magick and Paganism since adolescence. He is an Adept of the <a href="http://www.osogd.org/">Open Source Order of the Golden Dawn</a> and a Reiki Master. <p>H. Jeremiah Lewis, also known by his religious name Sannion, is a Greco-Egyptian polytheist who has been actively honoring the gods since around 1993. He has lived all over the country, including Alaska, Nevada, New York, Montana, Washington and Oregon (where he currently resides), and has worked the standard assortment of odd jobs that every aspiring author needs to get by with. Mr. Lewis divides his time between an insanely intense religious practice, writing, research, helping to organize the activities of <a href="http://neosalexandria.org">Neos Alexandria</a>, and directing the <a href="http://neosalexandria.org/publishing.htm">Bibliotheca Alexandrina</a>. There isn&#8217;t much time for anything else.</p>
<p><strong>July 24th</strong> &#8211; <a href="http://orchardsforever.blogspot.com/">Peg Aloi</a></p>
<p>Peg Aloi is a Pagan and a scholar who works in both the academic and popular arenas. She is a writer on Paganism and the media for <a href="http://www.witchvox.com/">Witchvox</a>, is the co-editor with Hanna E. Johnston of the new volume <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/New-Generation-Witches-Contemporary-Controversial/dp/0754657841/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1196713485&amp;sr=1-1">&#8220;The New Generation Witches: Teenage Witchcraft in Contemporary Culture&#8221;</a></em> (Ashgate, 2007), and is currently co-authoring a book with Hannah titled <em>&#8220;The Celluloid Bough: Cinema in the Wake of the Occult Revival&#8221;</em>.</p>
<p>Please give all of them a warm and hospitable welcome, I&#8217;m certain they will all contribute something special to <em>The Wild Hunt</em>. <blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;there&#8217;s also something that&#8217;s a little off in my craving for fame through writing. I can joke about it, but I know it&#8217;s there. When my friend K. is talking about his latest writing project, or the interaction with the organizers at a festival where he&#8217;s presenting, I think, &#8220;I want that!&#8221; I don&#8217;t just want to write for the sake of the writing, or publish for the sake of communicating with an audience. I&#8217;m attracted to the shallow, superficial aspects of it, too. I want the sense of being Important, and having people act like they agree with me. It&#8217;s very adolescent, really. And it&#8217;s also very, very Pagan &#8230; it&#8217;s a way of life in the Pagan world. In the Pagan world, all too often, you can tell exactly who the Big Name Pagans are by how they walk into a room. And those of us with friends who are Big Name Pagans&#8211;or even passing acquaintances who are Big Name Pagans&#8211;are under a constant temptation to puff ourselves, at least a little, by name dropping.&#8221;</em></p></blockquote>
<p>While I&#8217;m certainly no <a href="http://www.starhawk.org/">Starhawk</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margot_Adler">Margot Adler</a>, or <a href="http://www.thorncoyle.com/">Thorn Coyle</a>, I have spent quite a bit of time processing my own small piece of Pagan notoriety. I too have felt the pressure to publish <em>that</em> book, the book that would cement my name and place in Pagan history, and I was more than a little pleased when I started getting offers to speak at festivals and public events. But at the same time I, like Cat, have felt deeply ambivalent concerning the way our communities measure what she (and the Quakers) call &#8220;weight&#8221; (which I gather is akin to spiritual authority). I have also realized that I may never write <em>that</em> book, or if I do, it won&#8217;t be anytime soon, or in a form that will garner me the kind of Pagan-fame that gets people to name-drop you in occult stores. I realized that what I am is a new-media journalist and commentator, and that for me to be truly effective at what I do I can never aspire to be part of the unspoken Pagan hierarchy Cat describes, a pecking order that can value sales and volume over truth or accuracy.</p>
<p>I urge all my readers to <a href="http://quakerpagan.blogspot.com/2009/05/fame.html">read her post</a>, and tell me what you see when you look at our &#8220;leaders&#8221; and &#8220;teachers&#8221;. Are our brightest lights there on merit? Or are they simply the ones with the best representation and publishing contracts? Have you felt the urge to &#8220;publish that book&#8221;? Have you ever found yourself name-dropping some BNP (big-name Pagan) at an event or shop? What do you think about Pagan fame?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Let me make a pitch for one of my favorite Pagan causes: being rooted in experience.</p>
<p>We like to say that Paganism is not about following a creed or obedience to commandments written in an ancient book.  It&#8217;s about lived experiences: direct encounters with our gods and our communities, with nature and with spirit.</p>
<p>So why is nearly everything we write in the form of a recipe book?  Why so little in the way of lived experience? For a religion of direct, personal gnosis, we have remarkably little writing about what happens when we set out to practice rather than preach.</p>
<p>I propose we change that. Here is my challenge to you:</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t tell me how your tradition draws down the moon or performs a proper blot.  Instead, tell me about the first time you led a public ritual: about how your knees were wobbly, and you began to sweat; about how you were afraid that nothing would happen.  And then it did.  And something in the sound of the drums took hold of you, and you felt different, and the world changed.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t tell me that Paganism celebrates the body and honors sexuality.  Tell me about the scent of pine needles in your hair when you kissed your lover under the stars, and about how the smell of pine sap and wood smoke can still make you dizzy.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t tell me that community is important in Paganism.  Tell me about finding your first Pagan community, and about that heady rush like first love you felt for it.  And about the crushing pain that followed the first betrayal (the leader that was manipulative; the grove member who stole; the coven-mate whose oaths didn&#8217;t keep her from outing one of you) and how you came to terms with it.  How you learned to embrace the Pagan world despite its flaws&#8211;or dedicated yourself to eradicating them.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t tell me that Pagans find our gods in nature.  Tell me about the time you climbed a mountain to celebrate with them, but it turned cold and foggy, and you thought you were lost forever until you spotted that raven that looked at you out of just one eye.  Tell me about the taste of the meat from the deer you hunted yourself&#8211;or about the look of kinship in the eyes of the possum you accidentally killed, which made you give up meat-eating forever.</p>
<p>Tell me about how hot your sweat lodge was and how thirsty you emerged from it, when you explore whether or not Pagan sweat lodges are cultural appropriation.  Tell me about the first time you saw an aura&#8211;or the time you were the only one who couldn&#8217;t see one, in your whole magical lodge&#8211;before you tell me about psychic phenomena.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t give me your ideas on Pagan life, my sisters and brothers.  I have ideas enough of my own.  And don&#8217;t give me answers, because ours is a religious movement with hundreds of answers, thousands of answers.</p>
<p>Give me your experience. Give me the marrow and the meat of your spiritual life.  Because, unless you write it down, no one else ever will. <p>T. Thorn Coyle is a magic worker, mystic, musician, and author of <a href="http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=62-1585423475-0">&#8220;Evolutionary Witchcraft&#8221;</a> and the forthcoming &#8220;Kissing the Limitless.&#8221; She teaches internationally. <p>M. Macha NightMare, Priestess &#038; Witch, is an author, teacher and ritualist, with a penchant for collaboration. She is an initiate of two traditions of Witchcraft:  <a href="http://www.reclaiming.org/about/origins/rectrad-craft.html">Reclaiming</a> and <a href="http://www.feritradition.org/grimoire/history.htm">Faery/Feri</a>, Reclaiming’s root tradition. Macha has authored, co-created, or contributed to, several books. Most notably <a href="http://www.machanightmare.com/books.htm#PBOLD">&#8220;The Pagan Book of Living and Dying&#8221;</a> (with Starhawk and Reclaiming), and <a href="http://www.machanightmare.com/books.htm#WOW">&#8220;Witchcraft and the Web&#8221;</a>. In addition, she currently chairs the Public Ministry Department at <a href="http://cherryhillseminary.org/">Cherry Hill Seminary</a>, and serves on the Board of Directors at the <a href="http://womeninreligion.org/">Foundation for the Advancement of Women in Religion</a>.</p>

<p>Chas S. There may be only several hundred Quaker pagans, but among American Quakers, their presence can be distinctly felt.&#8221;</i></p>
<p>The article also speaks to Pagan-turned-Christian <a href="http://anamchara.com/">Carl McColman</a>, and Stasa Morgan-Appel of the <a href="http://aquakerwitch.blogspot.com/">Musings of a Quaker Witch</a> blog. The tone of <a href="http://newsinitiative.org/authors/mstreib">religion journalist Matthew Streib</a> seems to be intrigued but cautious, noting that the dwindling number of Quakers could receive an infusion of new blood from curious Pagans, but that the tradition (specifically the <a href="http://www.fgcquaker.org/">Friends General Conference</a>) risks <a href="http://www.modernreformation.org/default.php?page=blog_view&#038;var1=ViewInd&#038;var2=1&#038;var3=322&#038;var4=main&#038;var5=Home">losing its focus on Christ</a> (and thus its Christian identity).</p>
<p><i>&#8220;[Cat Chapin-Bishop] says many pagans find Quakerism attractive because it allows them to appear more mainstream. Still, she worries that if their commitment doesn&#8217;t deepen, that could weaken Quaker beliefs. &#8220;I see the pagan world waking up and saying, `Wow, there&#8217;s Quakers, and maybe we could be Quakers and pagans &#8212; cool!&#8217;&#8221; she said. &#8216;If it stays on that superficial level, that&#8217;s not good news, and threatens Quakerism with real dilution. But if there are some leadings and people &#8230; take in the wisdom that people have to teach us, then it&#8217;s a wonderful thing for both pagans and the Society of Friends.&#8217;&#8221;</i></p>
<p>Could the more liberal strains of Quakerism slowly evolve into a post-Christian faith? It isn&#8217;t an unheard-of event. <a href="http://www.uua.org/">Unitarian-Universalism</a>, once two distinct liberal Christian traditions, has embraced a post-Christian identity and now <a href="http://www.uua.org/visitors/beliefswithin/index.shtml">happily includes a number of theological points of view</a> (including <a href="http://www.cuups.org">Paganism</a>) within its ranks. Whether these theological shifts are ultimately healthy is a topic that is still being debated, though even <a href="http://journal.earthwitness.org/the-ew-journal/">conservative Quakers</a> are <a href="http://www.modernreformation.org/default.php?page=blog_view&#038;var1=ViewInd&#038;var2=1&#038;var3=322&#038;var4=main&#038;var5=Home">hesitant to take an action that would make Pagans feel unwelcome.</a></p>
<p><i>&#8220;Christ is not the sort of person who would drive people away &#8212; I don&#8217;t know that it&#8217;s our job to stop it &#8230; Our job is to seek to know the will of the living Christ and to obey it the best we can. When we humans try to fix one another, we just make things much, much worse.&#8221;</i></p>
<p>Whether its fate is to remains essentially Christian, or evolve into something else, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quakers">the Religious Society of Friends</a> will most likely avoid hostile cries of heresy and fights over blasphemy that would be greeted if this trend manifested in a more mainstream Christian church. Instead, the Quakers will most likely do what they have always done, listen in silence, and wait for the &#8220;leading of the spirit&#8221;.<br />
