The Oprah/Secret piece was interesting. That was early last year--didn't she distance herself from it later? Fuzzy memory of something along those lines...

I agree with many of the claims about THE SECRET and see it as simplistic. There's some truth to the concept of purely mental attraction, but it seems to come with a set of other "laws" that condition the arena and scope of its operation.

I'm interested in why so many dismissals of THE SECRET are so snarky. It always seems like folks failing in the meritocracy making fun of folks failing with magical thinking. I tend to agree with just about everything in the Salon piece, but the writer seems a bit embittered. I wish in both systems there was a more realistic assessment of randomness and disproportionate returns.

It seems manifestly foolish to me to embrace the simplistic magicalism of THE SECRET... but so too about the big lies about merit and justice the writer seems to proffer as alternatives.

Where's the real politic? Not just about human motivation, but about the reality of limited resources. The union line is the best part of the piece, because it seems to me that the root of both lies is in capitalist power structures; forceful assertion of collective power is necessary.

BTW - over at the Conservative Political Action Committee's convention (the Burning Man for wingnut bloggers), or buddy Joseph Farrah of World Nut Daily delivered a speech on the greatest danger to America today: witches.

I picked it up here, from an undercover progressive blogger's infiltration report at Sadly, No:

http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/8695.html

I've looked for the video or transcript, but nothing yet. I'm sure it will be out there soon, tho - what with the extreme danger that witches pose to the body politic, AMERICA MUST BE WARNED!
