Given his list, I think it would be safe to suggest that Polk might be loosely termed a "high church Asatru." As such, it might be prudent to look at what accommodations are made for Roman Caltholic, Anglo-Catholic, and other "bells and smells" Christian inmates.

As for whether all those things are "absolutely necessary" to practice Asatru, haven't we had similar discussions on this blog before, suggesting that what is ultimately "necessary" is and should be left in the eye of the particular adherent?

On stories like this I typically see the Pagan community divided between those angry at the discrimination and those saying that either our religions don't actually need the tools or prisoners don't deserve them.

Our are certainly religions that make heavier usage of ritual items regardless of whether or not they are strictly necessary. I tend to weigh in on the side of wanting prisoners to have access to the items -- especially if they are not dangerous to own or expensive for the state to procure.

In the example above, you can be sure "Asatru" was not on the list of religions to choose from. At best, he had an "Other" choice.

Polk needs only his intentions, maybe apple juice or other suitable drink, a plastic cup to drink it from and a patch of earth to libate it on, THATS IT. This whole "I am being denied" my "tools" is ridiculous and has no merit. ANY Asatruar/heathen will tell you you do not need a laundry list of trinkets to perform blót and anyone saying otherwise if full of newage-sewage.
