Cara,

Now *that* is some useful information that needs to get shared with the community. Thanks so much for posting it - hey, J, think you can do a post with this info? It would be a real public service to the community.

Child custody - after the many times I had read about keeping you paganism secret so you don't loose your children, I asked my husband to do a search on all US court cases in the last 3 years that involve custody and Paganism and/or Wicca. (He is an attorney) I wanted to know just how big of a problem it was.

So far, he hasn't found a single case where the children were permanently removed soley due to religion. The cases involed drug use, sexual acts performed in front of the children, living quarters so filthy the family was evicted, leaving the child alone for days at a time, etc.

In a few cases, children were removed for a short period of time until the claims were sorted out - (the claim was made during a divorce by the other parent.) And there were a few cases that were older where the judge didn't want the children exposed to a "fringe" religion. That was over turned on appeal and is now fairly good case law to cite.

His bit of advice - if DSS, your EX, a doctor, a teacher at a school, or anyone else starts asking you questions about your child and how you parent - shut your mouth and get an attorney right then and there. Yes, you will have an attorney bill...but it may stop things before they get out of hand and it will be much less expensive to prevent removal from the home than it is to get the children back.
