The Goddess Returns?
Reuters reports that a small girl born in a village in the eastern state of Bihar is being worshiped as a reincarnation of the Indian goddess Durga.

The Goddess Durga
The baby girl (also named Durga), who has tumorous growths resembling extra limbs is drawing thousands of people who are leaving offerings to the child-goddess.
“The baby, also named Durga, had been wrapped in a cloth and surrounded by flowers as a stream of visitors, their hands folded in prayer, come to her home in Diuri village, 110 km (70 miles) south of Patna, Bihar’s capital.”
Local officials are worried that the child isn’t receiving proper medical care. One version of the article plainly states that the parents can’t afford medical treatment.
“The tumors on the infant look like extra limbs, drawing locals with gifts of fruits and flowers. “People believe the girl is their deliverer, but experts say it is a congenital defect,” said a senior police officer in the eastern state of Bihar. “We hope they understand that the child needs treatment,” he said, adding her parents could not afford medical treatment.”
But perhaps the child has been blessed by this Mother Goddess. Now that thousands of offerings have been made and international attention gained, it seems likely that the girl will receive the medical treatment she needs to survive. Perhaps proving that the gods have their own ways of bestowing a blessing.
