I Heard You Know A Lot About Satan

666 is coming. No, not the antichrist (or even Aleister Crowley), the date of June 6th, 2006 is fast approaching. A classic Satanic horror-film remake is coming out on that date, the Church of Satan is throwing a big party, and it seems rumors are circulating that bad things will happen. Who do you call for the inside scoop? Why a Wiccan of course!

“This all sounds like a lot of hooey to Asheville resident Byron Ballard, a practitioner of the earth-based religion Wicca for the past 32 years and a high priestess for 10. She says people often lump pagans like her in with Satanists, although the two have no connection. “The interesting thing about Satanists – and by that I mean real Satanists and not just teenagers trying to freak out their Baptist parents – is they tend to be atheists, and they celebrate their own free will and think that is paramount,” Ballard said, adding they’re usually well-educated, older and fairly wealthy. The numbers 666 representing Satan may be questionable anyway, scholars say. It’s more likely a reference to the Roman emperor Nero and Rome’s occupation of the Holy Land.”

Did the reporter not think to do a google search? Maybe e-mail someone at The Church of Satan or The Temple of Set? Do we really need another article on things diabolic featuring a Wiccan disassociating? If a reporter comes to a Pagan looking for information about Satanism, the smart thing to do (in my humble opinion) would be to direct them to actual Satanists. But I’m kind of nutty that way.

This is such a non-story (is that even a word? you know what I mean). I’m totally with you on this. I realize Pagans want good press, but this is so silly. It’s like asking a Zoroastrian about Shauvot.

Ann Coulter is releasing her new book on that day as well. (shivers)
