Return of the Antlered God

Netribution interviews M J McMahon and Matthew Jones about their new short film “Hawk”. The film, which is currently having its trailer screened across the UK, deals with an orphaned boy who retreats into the forest and Welsh myth.

“Having spent his youth without the company of human beings save his reclusive grandfather, Rowan is lost and alone. When his only connection to the outside world succumbs to the bitter cold of the Welsh winter, Rowan becomes fearful of the world that lies beyond his woodland life and retreats into a fantasy world formed by his grandfather’s half remembered stories of Celtic folklore. In that shadowy world of old gods and wild hunts, the divide between man and beast becomes uncertain and the whispering of nature promises dark secrets. With the guidance of a hunting hawk, Rowan leaves behind the life of men and fashions himself into the greatest predator of all.”

The film plays up the conflict between Christianity and the ancient paganism of Wales according to producer Matthew Jones. A theme he feels is very relevant in today’s society.

“Hawk’s very much about religious conflict, and how that impacts on the way people live. In that sense, the issues are very contemporary.”

From here the trailer and a scene from the film will be shown at Cannes Film Festival, and then hopefully an eventual theatrical release. You can keep track of the film’s progress on their web site’s blog.
