The Original Greek Pop-Stars
While Greece may have problems allowing the free and open worship of the Olympian gods, it apparantly has no problem enlisiting them to promote European pop-event Eurovision (hosted this year in Athens).
“Zeus will jump on the stage singing “Volare” followed by other Olympian gods performing Eurovision hits when Athens hosts the annual song fest this weekend… Goddess of love Aphrodite sings “Diva”, Poseidon god of the sea performs “L’ amour est bleu”, while sprightly Spartan warriors wave their shields and spears to the music.”
This kitschy blasphemy hasn’t gone unnoticed, and the Greek press has reacted with a mixture of shock and embarassment.
“The opening ceremony was kitsch, to say the least. Greeks were left speechless and foreigners laughed” – Ethnos Newspaper
“What a joke! I never thought I’d see Zeus singing ‘Volare’. We have tonnes of antiquities, why don’t we send them all to Eurovision,” – Eleftheros Typos daily
“What was the creator’s intention? Kitsch for kitsch’s sake.” – Elefherotypia
Which I suppose goes to show that the original “superstars” of Greece aren’t to be taken too lightly.
