Wife Swap Reverberations and Repercussions
Since my post yesterday on the episode of “Wife Swap” that featured Wiccan High Priestess Bella Thompson swapping with ultra-traditional housewife Alison Aksam, current and former coven members have started commenting at my blog. The picture they collectively paint shows exactly why “reality” television is never worth the money they offer the participants. These shows exist to only make a mockery of things outside the accepted cultural norms.
Since I don’t know any of these people leaving comments, I won’t be making any judgements regarding their local conflicts, but I could have predicted the trouble and attention that comes when a television crew with an agenda approaches your house. If there is any sense in our larger Pagan community groups like The Aquarian Tabernacle Church, COG, NECTW, The ADF, CAW, The Troth, and others will be careful when associate organizations and local leaders are involved in exploitive programming. Let us try to understand that the phrase “no such thing as bad press” doesn’t apply when it tarnishes the faith we practice. Let us collectively refuse to be the playthings of television exploiters and let these vultures feed elsewhere.
ADDENDUM: Bella Thompson’s response to the show.
