Rosemary Kooiman Passes Into The Summerlands
The Washington Post has published an obituary of Rosemary Kooiman. Kooiman was the co-founder of the Nomadic Chantry Of The Gramarye, and was instrumental in fighting for the legal rights of modern Pagan clergy to marry couples. Kooiman was also a founding member of the CroneSpeak Organization and was involved in the Pagan Headstone Campaign. Kooiman died March 5 of a heart attack at her home, she was 77.

Rosemary Kooiman
“She became involved in neopagan religious practices in Michigan in the 1970s, because she could not find a Christian group that met her needs. Through anthropology courses at a community college and two trips to Mexico, she became acquainted with paganism, which is rooted in nature and encompasses a range of polytheistic traditions, including druidism and Wicca. She turned her back on Christianity’s Father God and embraced paganism’s Mother Earth, she explained in later years.” – Joe Holley, The Washington Post
Imajicka and Boudica from The Wiccan / Pagan Times have also posted an obituary at The Witches’ Voice.
“She was a strong willed fiery woman. We figured she would probably outlive all of us, she was that stubborn sometimes. But that was her life. She had fought for her own religious rights over and over. From getting authorization from the various States to be able to perform legal Handfastings, even going to court when necessary, to getting Incorporation and a 501c3 for her Nomadic Chantry of the Gramarye. With Abe always at her side, she stood very strong within the legal system and always seemed to get it going in the right direction for her work.”
We honor the passing of one of our elders. May she find peace in the Summerlands and rest in the arms of her goddess.
