The Druidic Punchline
Sometimes synchronicity is a harsh mistress. The other day the satirical film “Fear of Girls” which lampoons fantasy role-players was brought to my attention. One interesting addition to the usual social misfit pile-on was the fact that one of the profiled gamers was a “Druid” and plays out a painfully funny interaction between the gamer, his Christian pastor brother, and his fire-and-brimstone wife.

That very same day I was reading Slate’s round-up of the Superbowl commercials and noticed that Druids had come up again. This time in a commercial for Emerald Nuts. Their ongoing campaign has commercial spots featuring a different acronym spelling out “Emerald Nuts”. This year during the Superbowl the acronym was “Eagle-eyed Machete Enthusiasts Recognize A Little Druid Networking Under The Stairs”.

Between the viral nature of humorous videos like “Fear of Girls” and the fact that millions watch the Superbowl (and possible millions more checking out the Internet just to see the commercials) will the popular conception of Druids be changed? Will Druids go from white-robed, white-bearded sages from times past to short weird folks in brown robes? One thing seems certain, Druids do seem to be the punchline of the moment. I’m sure this relieves some modern Wiccan practitioners who feel that have been carrying water in the public mockery department long enough.
