Never Mind That Pagan Stuff!

Visiting a Celtic land? Well don’t bother with all that pre-Christian history and folklore! The Celtic lands should stick to folk music and food according to Anthony Peregrine writing about Brittany for The Sunday Times travel section.

“…beware the excesses of Breton Celtic-ery. Folk music and crepes are great. Mystical symbols and magical amulets are crackers.”

He tries to avoid any talk of the “crackers” mystical stuff until the final day…

“Auberge le Youdig, where marshes, hills and lake meet. It is home to the Korrigan little people, to Ankou, the steward between life and death, and to washerwomen who will squeeze all the blood out of you. The gates of hell are also in the vicinity. In other words, it is the exact spot to discover how resistant you are to myth-making. The host, Claude Lelan, tells tales weaving together megaliths, saints and spectral horsemen. How far down this legendary road you go will depend on how much you?ve drunk at dinner. But, however far it is, the travelling is splendid.”

The moral of this story is obvious. Don’t get drunk in a Celtic country lest you start believing in ancient Celtic folklore and pre-Christian practices!
