Paganism Goes Primetime

Newsweek’s cover story this week is about spirituality in America and how an explosion of tolerant, private, religiosity is spreading. For once Paganism is listed alongside all the mainstream faiths and nary a sneer quote or snide comment about broomsticks to be seen. They even acknowledge that all Pagans aren’t Wiccans!

“Even nature-worshiping Pagans are divided into a mind-boggling panoply of sects, including Wicca, Druidism, Pantheism, Animism, Teutonic Paganism, the God of Spirituality Folk and, in case you can’t find one to suit you on that list, Eclectic Paganism.”

While not all modern Pagans are “nature-worshipping” this is a quantum leap forward in understanding among the mainstream press. For more on the article check out Isaac Bonewits’s blog entry (he was interviewed for the feature). Newsweek also has a “Dictionary of the Divine” with entries on modern Paganism and Wicca.

This is good news indeed! Maybe compared to Pat Robertson we don’t look half bad anymore.
