I don't know if the relation of Thule with "actual Paganism" was superficial or not. Sebottendorf, Rosenberg, even Hess, were indeed interested in esoteric knowledge and Aryan myths, and they had their connections with Crowley and the remnants of the Golden Dawn, who as you know are also the main sources of Gardnerian Wicca. Sebottendorf did not fall in disgrace because of his Pagan beliefs but because of his carelessness, as explained in this Jewish page (http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/Sebottendorf.html).
OTOH Sebottendorf also founded Thule coming from a Sufi Muslim background in Turkey. Does this involve Islam in the development of Nazism? Most probably not, but facts are there and they can be interpreted but not denied.

It is also arguable whether modern Asatru religion is also superficial in relation to the actual Norse myths, rituals and practices (which as you know included human sacrifice, and of course animal sacrifice as it was common everywhere including Judaism). Discussing about superficiality or banality is always a difficult issue, particularly when, from a modern post-industrial point of view, attempts at reconstructing a historical culture that vanished long ago are discussed. (Don't take me wrong: I love Norse mythology because I find it much more tragic that the easy-going Olympic gods, but loving mythical stories and characters is one thing and practising a religion and actually "believing" it is another thing.)

As I said in my previous post, perhaps in America things are different and "groups like modern Asatru wrestle often with racist splinter groups" as you say. My feeling is that the situation is Europe is usually the reverse. Other analysis about American Asatru seem to contradict your opinion and the right-wing is slowly becoming the majority, e.g. as told in this article:
http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?aid=236
