Rockridge and Paganism
As you may have heard by now I’m participating in a 10-day online conference for religious progressives hosted by The Rockridge Institute (a progressive think-tank and home of author George Lakoff).
Yesterday many threads in the talks brought up the dominance of the Christian perspective, which was best summed up by this quote from the days’ wrap-up.
“I am astounded at how dominant the “Christian” perspective is in this forum. Even the question, to which this is not exactly a reply but more of a challenge, assumes that “we” are Christian and need to figure out “what to do” with those (others) who are not (like) us. For those of us who are not Christian, this discussion is quite alienating. Of course, I should speak for myself. As a practicing Jew and a once-practicing (and still believing) Buddhist, I feel strongly that we do not live in a “Christian nation.” This country needs to figure out how to be large and expansive enough to accommodate people of all faiths, of all traditions, of all colors and all orientations. This discussion can grow if people are able to express beliefs and experiences that fall outside of the purview of Christianity.”
But it looks like the Pagan activity in the conference is having an effect on the assumptions of the make-up of religious progressives:
This was followed up by a Pagan who wondered why there were no Pagan hosts on this discussion. Good question, and one we will consider for the future. Even now, we’re putting out a call to see if there are any Pagans who will join us as hosts.
So we are making our voices heard. Keep posting and interacting! If you haven’t already join in. Today’s discussion centers around “Conceptualizations of God”.
