Pagan Saints

I’m a big sucker for Icons and illustrations of the Saints. For example, I’m currently enjoying my new-ish copy of “Holy Cards” by Barbara Calamari and Sandra Dipasqua which shows several fine examples of the evolution and origin of these religious keepsakes. I have always wished for a Pagan version and thanks to Trinity Stores I can see what such cards may look like.

Merlin of Britain

The card illustrated by Brother Robert Lentz (a Franciscan friar) depicts Merlin as a holy man and has this (among other things) to say about the Icon.

“Merlin was in fact a shaman, with healing and prophetic skills. Through his power over wild animals, he became identified with the Celtic Horned God — and for this reason holds a deer skull in this icon. With one foot in both worlds: the world of animals and the world of kings –he also manifested the archetype of the trickster.”

Lentz also illustrates a very goddess-esque Eve, and a very pagan Saint Brigid. Which I hope will help inspire some excellent Pagan Iconography soon!
