Rooming With The Unknown

In the Courier Press a Gothic Witch is presented as the ultimate roomate character builder.

“When I casually mention to people that I managed to stick out the whole year with my roommate, their reaction is always the same: “Why didn’t you get out of it?” Well, honestly, because living with a girl who some people on my floor referred to as The Antichrist was just too interesting.I never knew what she was going to do next. For the first time in my life, I was living on the edge. Would she cut me into little pieces in the middle of the night and offer me to a Wiccan god?”

But thankfully she manages to realise that she’s actually human!

” And for the first time, I realized my roommate wasn’t as evil as I thought she was. She was a person, too, just hidden behind a facade of black clothing.”

I’m trying to withhold my snark, I mean it’s always encouraging when a “norm” reaches out and tries to understand those on the cultural margins, but it seems that her enlightenment is more that she gains enough patience to put up with her strange roommate not that she actually researched Wicca or the Gothic subculture and gained a respect for these ways of life. In the end her awakening seems more patronizing than enlightened. Her roommate exposed as damaged goods instead of someone who made serious religious choices.
