The Church and The Gods

Angela Couloumbis writes about tensions between the Greek Orthodox Church and the mythologically themed Olympic opening ceremonies.

“Ultimately, it’s up to the organizers how they will depict the past,” Father Epifanios Economou, spokesman for the Greek Orthodox Church, said of the opening ceremonies. “From what we know, it’s going to be a theatrical performance, nothing more, because the religion of the ancient Greeks died 2,000 years ago.

But despite a firm conviction from the Church about the death of Greek pagansim small revival groups are starting to grow and thrive in the history-rich land. There is even a documentary out talking about these new pagans.

So when a giant statue of Athena rolls down the field don’t assume that everyone will take it as merely myth.
